Tourism

Kitakyushu City is situated in the northern area of Fukuoka prefecture, at the northernmost tip of the Kyushu island. The city faces the Honshu mainland with the Kanmon Strait running between. The city was established in 1963, through the merger of 5 cities, Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata, and Wakamatsu, becoming the first government‐ordinance‐designated city aside from the 3 major metropolitan areas and prefectural capitals. Apart from being a large government‐ordinance‐designated city, it also coexists with the nature. Kitakyushu city is surrounded by 3 seas; “Hibiki-nada” with its volatile waves, the fast moving “Kanmon Strait,” and peaceful “Suo-nada” of Seto Inland Sea. In addition, nearby are Hiraodai (one of Japan’s 3 largest Karst regions), and Mt. Sarakura with its more than 200° panoramic view of the city.
We hope you will enjoy your time in Kitakyushu City!

Kitakyushu, as a venue for your conference!

The City of Kitakyushu was created when 5 cities merged in 1963. Since the government-run Yawata Steel Works began operations in 1901, the city has developed around heavy and chemical industries such as iron and steel, machinery, and chemical companies, and has underpinned industrial modernization and rapid growth in Japan. In recent years, a concentration of many industries has been progressing in our city that includes the robotics, environmental, energy, services, and IT industries. Our city continues to develop today as a manufacturing town proud to possess advanced technological strength.
In addition, city residents, corporations, academic organizations, and local government have united to tackle environmental issues that have emerged along with the city’s development. These endeavors have resulted in being selected by the OECD in 2011 as a Green Growth City that successfully balances the environment and economy, and a model city for its Model Cities and Regions for the Sustainable Development Goals program in 2018. The City of Kitakyushu was the first in Asia to be awarded these designations.
We have confronted various issues faced by cities that include not only serious pollution, but also the decline of major industries and an aging population. However, each time we have adapted to become a Transformative City that overcame hardships and turned them into opportunities.

We are confident that by hosting the conference in our city, participants will gain inspiration here that leads to taking the next step.
